International Seminar:
”As
the Indus Flows”
KARACHI & ISLAMABAD – PAKISTAN
3rd
– 12th March 2006
Sixty
participants from sixteen countries attended the International Seminar which
was held from 3rd – 12th March 2006 in Islamabad and Karachi. The delegates were kept on their toes with interesting workshops and trips to
historical sites, museums and places of cultural interest.
Two
workshops titled “Sculptural Effects” and “A handful of Treasures” was
organised in Karachi using indigenous plant material. International exhibits
were staged by the visiting delegates. The Karachi Chapter staged a competitive
floral show where judging exercise was conducted by the delegates.
The
delegates then flew to the picturesque capital city of Islamabad. Their
programme commenced with a visit to the famous Faisal Mosque, which awed them
with its unique architecture. They enjoyed the rare collection of folk art and
artefacts at Lok Virsa, the National Institute of Folk and traditional
Heritage. Next day the visit to Taxila, the cradle of Ghandara Civilization
mesmerised the delegates with the rich remnant of an ancient culture. A
National Demonstration “Tread softly into this enchanted world” enthralled
everyone. In the evening a dinner was hosted by the Chief Minister Punjab. A
thrilling afternoon of yachting on the Mangla Dam was programmed, which was
followed by an unforgettable evening of a spectacular light and sound show that
unfolded the history of the historical Rohtas Fort.
The
Islamabad Chapter staged a Competitive Show for a judging exercise, followed by
an interesting workshop “Flirtation with Telli”. Daman-e-Koh, situated on top
of the Margalla Hills, with a panoramic view of Islamabad was the venue for
dinner with live traditional music.
The
highlight of the Seminar was an Air Safari to the “Roof of the World” in a
chartered PIA Boeing. It was a unique and breathtaking experience to view some
of the world’s tallest mountain peaks including the second highest peak, the
K-2. The delegates returned to a peaceful farmhouse for lunch.
The
First Lady of Pakistan Begum Sebha Musharraf hosted an enjoyable dinner to meet
the delegates and the diplomats of their respective countries at the President
House. To
cement the existing friendship between WAFA countries, an olive tree was
planted by a member of each country at the beautiful Rose and Jasmine Garden followed by an exciting outdoor workshop “Nature into Art” and a traditional
lunch in the gardens of a farm. Everyone returned to Karachi the same evening.
On
the last day the delegates visited the Mausoleum of The Father of the Nation,
Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and then onwards to Thatta to visit the
ancient necropolis, Makli, Chowkundi Tombs and the grand Shahjahan Mosque. In
the evening a reception was hosted at the Governor House. The climax of the
evening, a befitting finale at the Mohatta Palace was a tableau “Aangan say
Doli tak” depicting a Pakistani wedding, an important part of our culture,
ending with a Gala Dinner.
